Shahrisabz, located about 80 km south of Samarkand, is one of the most colourful and scenic cities in Uzbekistan. It is the birthplace of Timur or Tamerlane, the founder of the Timurid Dynasty, which made it a key city in Central Asia. However, the center of activity and power shifted to Samarkand and the city fell under the Bukharan rule.
Today, Shahrisabz is a backwater city standing in the shadows of Uzbekistan's city of Samarkand. But if one bothers to look long enough, they'll find that the city is rich with historic marvels to be pleased about. In fact, the city centre is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Here, tourists will find the ruins of Aq-Saray Palace, also known as the "White Palace," Timur's most grandiose piece of architecture. Unfortunately, little remained of this structure.
Tourists can also visit the Kok Gumbaz Mosque, which was built in 1437 in honor of Shah Rukh. There's also the memorial complex of Dorut Tilovat and Hazrat-i Imam, and the Tomb of Timur.
