Samarkand, the 2nd largest urban zone in Uzbekistan, is also the country's most notable city. This is due to its central and key position in the Great Silk Road, as well as also for being the hub for Islamic scholarly studies. It became the capital of the Tamerlane Empire where the Bibi-Khanym Mosque remains as the city's most prominent landmarks. The city center, Registan, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Among the many fascinating attractions in the city, the historic city centre is where everyone goes to first. Here, tourists will find a wealth of architectures that clearly represent what Samarkand, and perhaps Uzbekistan itself, is all about. A trip to the Shirdor Medrese, Gur Emir Mausoleum, Ulugbek's Observatory, and Tomb of Prophet Daniel will inspire awe.
Before leaving the city, visitors can take home something unique from the city, such as the Samarkand pistachio and Zeera. Those looking for another activity can visit a spa for a taste of the Samarkand deep tissue massage.
