Montevideo is Uruguay's capital city. It is a lively city rich in culture and has several attractions that entice tourists to come dropping by. Montevideo has an industrial port, a historic centre, a business district, that you may find it different from the usual beach towns of Uruguay nevertheless, the city is worth visiting.
A popular Montevideo structure is the Mausoleo de Artigas, a monument built as tribute to Jose Gervasio Artigas who was a hero of the Uruguayan Independence. The Palacio Salvo is also interesting as it was once considered the highest building in South America. You can ride the elevator in the building for free and go to the top to gain a nice view of Montevideo. If you wish to head to the beach, the barrio of Pocitos is a must visit, especially if you are interested in staying at beach front properties. Montevideo dishes are great, with meat based dishes as the most popular e.g. the parrillas, the chivito, etc. When in Uruguay, do not forget to tour Montevideo.
