Colonia del Sacramento or Colonia is a well loved tourist city in Uruguay. It was founded in 1680 by Manual Lobo who made the city a trading port because of its strategic location in between Brazil and the so called River Plate. Colonia is home to colonial buildings, cobblestone streets, and historical structures that a lot of people find interesting. Colonia's historic quarter Barrio Historico, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Colonia Del Sacramento's Old City may be smaller than other Uruguayan cities, but that still does not lessen the city's charm. You can rent scooters or bikes and tour around the area. If you have the love for theatre, the Bastion del Carmen is the perfect spot for you. If live music, food and handicrafts interest you, do not forget to drop by La Casona del Sur. Colonia also has a lot of restaurants that will surely serve you with delectable foods and delicious drinks such as the asado, the Yerba mate, among others.
