Kiev is the largest urban zone in Ukraine, and its capital. It is located on the Dnieper River in the north central area of the country. The capital city is an important educational, industrial, scientific, and cultural centre of Eastern Europe. Kiev is home to a number of educational institutions, industries, and world-famous landmarks.
Kiev's best tourists sights are its ancient churches overlooking the Dnieper River, of which many are significant in Orthodox Christianity. There's the St. Sophia's Cathedral, with its gold and green motif, and the Nezaleshnasti St. Michael's Monastery, with its prewinkle walls and golden domes. Travellers who visit should see the Caves Monastery Complex, the city's most famous attraction, and the 2 large catacombs containing embalmed bodies of monks.
A stroll through the city's main shopping avenue to Maidan Nezalezhnosti is a must do. The Andriyevsk Uzviz is the place to browse through markets, interesting museums, and take in panoramic views of Kiev.
