Ashgabat is the capital and biggest city of Turkmenistan.
The city of Ashgabat was rebuild in the fifties of the 20th century due to a devastating earthquake and this way it has a modern Soviet style with not much to see. There is just an old Russian imperial fortress and numberless monuments of the Turkmenbashi - the dictator of Turkmenistan.
Ashgabat is a good base for exploring Turkmenistan, as it has good connections with most of the country and due to the rich oil reserves of Turkmenistan in the capital are build many luxurious hotels.
Interesting places to visit, in the country taking its pride in carpet making, are the 9 carpet factories and the new Turkmen Carpet Museum, which has on display the largest carpet in the world - the 190-sq-m Tekke Bukhara.
