Marmaris, Turkey's fishing village for so many years is now a busy city because of its beaches and resorts flocked by tourists. Marmaris was part of the empire of Caria during 6th century B.C., until it was brought down by the Lydians. In 1425, the Ottomans ruled the city and in 1521 AD, the Ottoman leader Kanuni Sultan Suleyman decided to use the name Marmaris instead of Caria.
Luxury cruise ships dock at the city's port, enabling their passengers to experience the beautiful facilities of ‘Turkey's Resort Town', and also explore the nearby historical and archaeological landmarks. The Pamukkale, considered as the 8th Wonder of the World is one of the most popular Marmaris attractions. The Marmaris castle which has been standing since the 16th century is also a sight to behold. The golden beaches in the city do not only provide amazing views, but also provide the perfect setting for scuba diving. Marmaris is no longer a sleepy town – it is now an upbeat city loved by locals and tourists.
