El-Jem is a historic center in Tunisia, North Africa.
The city of El-Jem is dominated by one colossal historical landmark - its ancient Roman coliseum, which is a copy of the coliseum in Rome and is a World heritage site of UNESCO. This magnificent structure was able to host up to 35.000 spectators in its highs and still looks impressive only several minutes walk from the center of El-Jem.
The El-Jem coliseum was build as a token of appreciation to the Tunisian province of the Roman empire, due to the quality and quantity of the olives produced in the area. Just a quick walk in this building is enough to make you feel like in the times of the gladiators and lion battles. Some parts of the coliseum are under restoration and its true beauty is becoming even more visible.
