Pattaya is one of the biggest seaside resorts in Thailand, South Asia. Situated on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, Pattaya receives millions of visitors annually. Until the end of the 1950s, it was a fishing village sitting on an unspoiled natural harbor. Even after it was discovered by affluent Bangkok residents, it remained rather small and tranquil. Then came the Vietnam War, with thousands of American soldiers stationed at nearby air and naval bases. They piled into Pattaya, and the resort grew with the unrestrained fervor of any boomtown. In the late 1990s, after much talk and government planning, Pattaya started gaining popularity as a seaside resort. Two expressways were finished, making the trip from Bangkok even easier. Now that Bangkok's international airport is located on the southeast side of the capital, it is even more convenient to visit Pattaya When visiting Pattaya it is very important to plan your visit according to your main purpose and companions. If you are on a family visit, try to screen out some of the slum neighborhoods and keep on the safe family side of things. If your purpose is sex related tourism, than dive in the central parts of Pattaya, and plan your stay accordingly. Family-friendly Jomtien Beach makes a pleasant contrast to crowded, polluted Pattaya Beach, with its jet-skis and beach bars. Day-trips to nearby island groups are popular diversions, as are days spent at Pattaya's 21 golf courses and slew of amusement parks. Although more families are now visiting the city, most tourists flock for Pattaya's legendary nightlife.
