Bern is the capital city of Switzerland. Its name stands for the word ‘Bear' in German because bear pit attractions have been around in the city since the 1600s. Founded in the year 1191, it is nicknamed the Medieval City because many of the structures and architectures such as cobblestone streets and terraced houses found in Bern take people back to the Medieval Age. Other notable facts about Switzerland's capital city: Albert Einstein worked there; it is the birthplace of the famous Swiss cheese; and the well loved chocolate Toblerone originated there.
Bern is such a beautiful city. It is listed by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites. Some of the historical and cultural attractions people will find in the city include the Kuntsmuseum which displays artworks by famous artists like Picasso and Dali; the Zytglogge Tower, a medieval clock tower that showcases animated characters; the Prison tower which is the second tower and city gate of Bern, and many more.
