Uppsala, Sweden's 4th largest city is situated about 70 km north of Stockholm. It has almost 200,000 residents and is considered the ecclesiastical hub of the country, as it is the seat of the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. Furthermore, it boasts of housing the oldest university in the whole of Scandinavia. Uppsala University, which was founded in the year 1477, has about 20,000 students and consistently ranks as among the best universities in Northern Europe.   With a history that dates back to the Bronze Age, Uppsala possesses many beautiful buildings and sites that have great historic value, such as the 14th-century built Uppsala Cathedral. Dominating the city's skyline at 390 feet (119 metres) tall, the cathedral is Scandinavia's largest church as well as the burial site of many Swedish royals.   Another Uppsala attraction that should be visited is the 17th-century old Gustavianum, which houses Victoria Museum, Museum of Nordic Antiquities, as well as a collection of Egyptian artefacts and sarcophages. And speaking of museums, the Uppsala Castle is another historic building that is home to other museums in the city, including the local art museum Uppsala Konstmuseet.   Travellers looking for activities in Uppsala will enjoy a visit to many of the city’s parks and gardens, which includes Carl Linnaeus Garden and Botanical Gardens. Then there’s the Svartbäcksgatan, a pedestrian walkway that features many Uppsala restaurants and cafes that offer delicious local fare.   For the history fanatics, a trip 5 km north of the city will lead them to the Gamla Uppsala, which was the seat of the Swedish royalty and home to pre-Viking burial mounts, an old church, an open-air museum, and many old Swedish houses.   A full day out sightseeing can be tiring. So, the perfect day-ender is a well-deserved rest in one of the many Uppsala hotel offering deals and cosy accommodation. Budge hotels offer cheap rooms with free Wi-Fi, while mid-range hotels offer free breakfast. For something more luxurious, the Villa Anna is the perfect place to stay. Its central location keeps guests close to popular tourist destinations. It also offers suites and serves gests with the sauna and whirlpool.
