Gothenburg, located on Sweden's west coast where the river of Göta meets the North Sea, is the country's second largest city after the nation's capital, Stockholm. It is also the biggest port in Scandinavia and has more than 500,000 residents living within the city proper.   The city was founded by King Gustavus Adolphus in the year 1621 and became the centre of the ship-building industry of Sweden. Dutch merchants used Gothenburg as a base for their trading activities because of the city's convenient access to the Atlantic Ocean. Today, the city is not only a busy port city that welcomes hundreds of tourists every year, but also a place where global sporting events, conventions, and concerts can be enjoyed.   Gothenburg is a stunning, beautiful city with expansive green spaces, waterside location, exquisite architecture, and an array of cultural establishments, museums, and theatres that tourists will greatly enjoy. The Kungsportaveyn, or Avenyn for short, is the city's main boulevard which stretches to about 1 kilometre long. It boasts of Gothenburg's finest restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops. It is also the place where one can find the Gothenburg Museum of Art, a city library, as well as a theatre.   Nordstan, Scandinavian's biggest shopping complex, is one of Gothenburg's popular attractions. Located at the heart of the city, Nordstan boasts of over 180 shops as well as 150 offices, and was recorded to have had more than 35 million visitors in 2008. The Gothenburg Opera House, meanwhile, is an architectural landmark that stands adjacent to the Göta alv River.   As with any other European country, visiting the many museums of Gothenburg is an activity that travellers should not forgo. Aside from the museum of art, museums such as the Göteborgs Konsthall, Museum of World Culture, and Röhss Museum, are worth taking the time to see.   For those who don't want to be confined to outdoor activities, Gothenburg's Liseberg is Scandinavia's biggest amusement park. The Gothenburg Botanical Garden is a must-see destination, which has garnered a 3-star rating from the French Guide Rouge. Nearby is the city's lar
