Paramaribo is one of the beautiful cities in South America. It is not big, but it has an unique blend of nationalities due to the mix of Hindu, creools, japanese, Africans, Indians, and Europeans that live there. The city is surronded by wonderful jungle areas and this increases even more the uniqueness of the place.
Paramaribo was named after a nearby Indian village and found with the development by the Dutch colonists in 1667. The Historic Inner City of Paramaribo is worth visiting, as it combines European architecture and construction techniques with indigenous South American materials and crafts. Most of the buildings were built entirely by wood, and very vulnerable for fires at the time.
The designated area od the inner city is limited to the streets between Sommelsdijkse Creek tothe north and the Viottekreek to the south. Notable landmarks include: Fort Zeeland, Presidential Palace, Ministry of Finance, Reformed Church and the Roman Catholic Cathedral.
