Jeju Island, known in the past as Cheju Island, used to be part of the Jeollanam-do Province, but was considered separate in 1946. In fact, Jeju Island is now the one and only Autonomous Province in Korea. Referred to as the ‘Island of the Gods', Jeju is a popular honeymoon destination. South Korea even believes in is comparable to the US state Hawaii. This is because of the fact that you can watch the beautiful rising sun and the splendid sunsets while on the beach. Horseback riding, hiking on the trails of Halla-San, experiencing the Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls, among others, are sites and activities that make you feel as if you've died and gone to paradise – similar to a Hawaii experience.
Jeju night life is also well known. There are various casinos for those who enjoy gambling. There are night racing events that are considered famous Jeju attractions that take place during July and August. Do not forget to sample the Okdom fish and the Jari mulhoe, both local specialties of the island.
