Slovenia lies in the central part of Europe in the eastern part of the Alps. It is bordered to the north by Austria, to the southwest by Italy, to the northeast by Hungary and to the south by Croatia. The country enjoys varying terrains from the Julian Alps, to the Mediterranean beaches to hills that dominate the south. Slovenia gained its independence in 1991 from Yugoslavia on June 25. Slovenia has scenery that is some of the best in all of Europe. A number of places top the list when it comes to tourism in Slovenia. Just the fact the Alps make up part of the country and the Mediterranean is to the southwest is enough to attract many tourists. The country's capital is Ljubljana and has a number of Art Nouveau and Baroque buildings. Other important tourist areas include the beautiful Lake Bled, Mount Triglav, the Postajna Cave and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Skocjan Caves.
