Occupying a sizable slab of southwestern Singapore, sprawling Jurong was notoriously dubbed "Goh's folly" in the 1960s when, with the island on the road to independence, Goh Keng Swee, then Singapore's finance minister, decided it was vital to create a major industrial town here on unpromising swampy terrain. To the surprise of not just avowed skeptics, the new town took off, and today Jurong boasts a diverse portfolio of industries, including pharmaceuticals and oil refining – in which Singapore is a world leader despite having nary a drop of black gold of its own. When visiting Jurong it is advisable to make a plan of the things that you wist to see and dedicate the rest of your time to modern entertainment and leisure. Jurong also has sizable residential quarters and various leisure attractions, though only two constitute a serious temptation to make a trip here: the extensive avian zoo that is the Jurong BirdPark, and the Singapore Science Centre, genuinely ahead of the curve as such museums go, with an entertaining emphasis on interactivity. Other landmarks are: Chinese Garden - 32-acre reconstruction of a Chinese imperial garden. Japanese Garden - enchanting formal garden, Jurong Crocodile Paradise, Jurong Reptile Park, Ming Village, Singapore Mint Coin Gallery and Snow City. And don't forget - there are tons more of attractions, activities and interesting places to see in Jurong, visit them and write here at HolidayStreets.com about their beauty and mystery!
