Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and is actually the largest city. Its history dates back to the time of the Celtic tribes, in the 4th century BC. Belgrade was eventually conquered by the Romans, and the strong Roman influence is still present at the Kalemegdan Fortress. The Ottomans also invaded the country, and in 1800, when Serbia regained its independence, Belgrade became capital.
A popular Belgrade attraction is the Kalemegdan Fortress found in between the Sava and Danube Rivers, built for the city's protection. Today it is now considered the main park of Belgrade where aside from the fortress walls, people get to hang out in cafes, play basketball and tennis at the courts and visit several museums. Knex Milhailova is Belgrade's main street where you'll have access to various restaurants, galleries and bookstores. Belgrade's National Theatre is great for watching plays and ballet performances and also showcases beautiful works of art, not to mention, is decorated in gold.
