Rwanda's flag Flag of Rwanda
Rwanda is a small landlocked country in Central Africa.
The country of Rwanda became sadly known with the 1994 100 day genocide of over 800.000 people from the Hutu extremists. This was and the escalating point of the unrest in the country, which led to loosing its position as visited tourist destination.
Nowadays Rwanda is struggling to coma back as world tourism destination and this is being achieved slowly. Rwanda even expects its first 5 star hotel in 2012, close to capital Kigali, which is one of the evidences of the country's efforts.
Interesting sites to see in Rwanda include the memorial museum of the genocide in Kigali, several national parks with endangered mountain gorillas amongst other species, impressive lake Kivu and the active volcano in Goma. Interesting cities include Gisenyi close to the volcano, Kibuye close to lake Kivu and site of one of the biggest massacres in the genocide and the university town of Butare.
