Situated at the confluence of the rivers Volga and Kotorosl, Yaroslavl is a place with a major urban feel. However, instead of the usual big-city horizon, Yaroslavl's skyline is dominated by towering spires and onion domes. It has some of the region's most striking monasteries and churches, which includes the Church of the Prophet Elijah. These structures highlight some of Russia's beautiful frescos and architecture. For this reason, the city is a World Heritage Site.
Yaroslavl also features, more or less, a dozen institutions for higher learning, making it a college town. The city has an efficient transportation system with two major train stations travelling daily to and from Moscow and St. Petersburg. Among the Yaroslavl attraction is the Volkov Theater which was built in 1750 and is the oldest theater in Russia. There's also the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour which features the Holy Gate and the Cathedral of the Transfiguration.
