Lagos is a seaside town of the province of Algarve in Portugal, Western Europe. Moorish and Renaissance influences abound in Lagos, from its fortress to its plethora of magnificent churches. Lagos was favoured by Henry the Navigator, who used it as a base for African trade. Europe's first slave market was built here in 1441 in the arches of the Customs House, which still stands in the Praça da República near the waterfront. While Lagos' history is rich, it is the area's fine sandy beaches, nightlife and beach bars, such as Bahia Beach Bar and Retiro do Marujo, which attract large numbers of visitors each summer. Frequent buses serve Lagos, making it the easiest way to get around. When visiting Lagos you are advised to enjoy to the max the nice vacation atmosphere and to plan many sunny beach days in your schedule.
