Torun is Poland's medieval city. Most of the city's residences and churches showcase Gothic styles leading to Torun's slogan ‘Gotyk na dotyk' or Touch Gothic. The Teutonic Order is believed to be responsible for establishing the city during the 13th century. During that time the Teutonic people built a castle in the area for the purpose of conquering and evangelizing Prussia.
Perhaps the most interesting fact about Torun is that it was the birthplace of the renowned astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. When in Torun you should not forget to visit the house where Copernicus was born and the Cathedral of SS Johns where he was christened.
Torun's New Town Market is the place to be for shopping and dining as it houses shopping malls such as the Dom Towarowy and the Galeria Copernicus plus several restaurants and cafes. Torun is also famous for gingerbreads which you should not forget to sample. Tourist attractions in the area abound attracting countless visitors to Torun.
