Puno is located on the southeastern side of Peru, along the shore of the world' highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca. An important livestock and agricultural region, the city may not be as beautiful as other cities in Peru. However, it boasts of being the best place to experience Peruvian culture particularly the Feast of the Virgen de la Candelaria.
The city is also makes the ideal base for visiting the towns surrounding the lake and archeological sites. In fact, one of the best activities in Puno is to ride a boat and visit the Uros Islands. This floating island is made of tortora reed crafted by its inhabitants for thousands of years. Tourists can also visit the city's colonial churches such as the Cathedral of Puno, which was built in the 1700s.
For a lesson in culture and history, the Yavari and Coca Museums are the perfect place to visit. Meanwhile, a good place to relax is at the Casa del Corrigidor, Puno's oldest residences where one can enjoy a cup of cappuccino and pastry.
