Cusco, or Cuzco, is a beautiful city situated in the Southern Sierras in Peru. It was once the capital of the Inca Empire and still bears many of the ancient empire's structures, in part or in whole. This, plus its rich Incan heritage, makes the city the premiere archeological site in the Americas as well as the country's tourist capital. As if that's not enough, Cusco is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Located at the heart of Cusco is the historic Plaza de Armas. This central square is the perfect jump-off point for exploring the city. Southeast of the plaza is Avenida del Sol, the city's main business hub. Head north or east and one will find Cusco's old quarters. A little further but still nearby is the Andean's highest fort of Machu Picchu.
As a former Incan capital, Cusco's main attractions are the numerous ruins found within it. The most famous is the Sacsayhuaman, the head of the puma that has become the symbol of the city. There's also the Puca Pucara, Tambo Machay, and Qenko.
