Lagos, though not the capital, is the largest city in Nigeria and the most populous. Its name came from the Portuguese term for lagoon, a port city that became a political centre for the British, as well as Nigeria's capital until 1991 when the seat of government transferred to Abuja.
However, Lagos remains an economic and cultural force in Nigeria, boasting an excellent night life and music scene. It is divided into different geographical locales, with most of the population living on the mainland as well as a number of large industries.
Meanwhile, Lagos Island is the main business district of the city. It is distinguished by high-rise buildings and large wholesale markets, such as the Balogun and Idumota markets. This is also the locations of several landmarks including the National Museum, Tinubu Square, and Oba Palace to name a few.
Victoria Island, on the other hand, is the site of expensive real estate, where luxury apartments and condos, as well as huge shopping areas, are located.
