Kano, a city in the northern part of Nigeria, is the second largest city in the country in terms of population. It covers 449 sq m and consists of 8 districts or local government area. It is serviced by the Mallan Aminu Kano International Airport, which is also serving the whole of Northern Nigeria.
The city is situated about 481 metres above sea level and lies north of the Jos Plateau. Kano features a semi-arid and hot climate typical of the region for most of the year, with most rain falling from June to September. It becomes cooler, though during the months of December through February.
Although not the typical tourist destination, Kano boasts some fascinating places to see. This includes the formerly walled Old City, which managed to survive years or turmoil. This is where travellers can see the colourful Kurmi Market, the Great Mosque, the Emir's Palace, the Gidan Makama Mosque, and a museum, which is housed in a 15th-century building, declared as a national monument.
