Niamey is Niger's capital and also its largest city. The city lies on the eastern banks of the Niger River and is the country's cultural, economic, and administrative centre. It has an estimated population of more than 700,000 people in 2006. Niamey's main industries include brick making, ceramic goods, weaving, and manufacturing of cement.
Believed to have been founded in the 18th century, Niamey was not particularly of importance to the country until the French developed a post in the city in the 1890s. It rapidly developed and became Niger's capital in 1926.
Today, as the centre of economy, the city boasts of several tourist-worthy attractions including the Niger National Museum, which houses dinosaur skeletons and the Tree of Tenere. There's also the Niamey Grand Market, where tourists can find traditional goods to take home. While here, travellers should see the largest most in Niger, the Grand Mosque of Niamey, with its prominent blue dome and expansive grounds.
