Wellington is the political capital of New Zealand. Wellington was first settled by the Maori around the 11th century. The first European settlers in the area arrived in the first half of the 19th century. The city was named capital of New Zealand in 1865 and since than is the administrative center of New Zealand. When visiting Wellington you should keep in mind that the city is medium sized and full of numerous and various attractions. The compact downtown is easy to explore on foot. On the other hand you may explore the aboriginal history of the country and Polynesia in numerous museums and places. The always present sea, volcanoes and wildlife points of interest are also a one-of-a-kind landmark of Wellington, that you may explore for some days of your stay. You may take a nocturnal tour of Karori Wildlife Sanctuary to meet some colorful inhabitants. Popular is also people-watching while sipping coffee in lively Courtney Place. Discovering the city's Maori roots is easy at the Museum of Wellington City and Sea, plus more of this identity at Museum of New Zealand. Surveying the city from scenic Mount Victoria is one of the musts when visiting Wellington as well. Other landmarks are the Botanic Gardens where you can take the cable car up and stroll back down for great views, beautiful roses and the lovely Begonia House, the Parliamentary District with the country's seat of power and associated national institutions or Matiu/Somes Island Cruises to this wildlife reserve and former quarantine station in the middle of Wellington Harbor.
