Patan is one of Nepal's largest cities and is separated from Kathmandu by the Bagmati River. The city is also known as Lalitpur that often confuses visitors when they arrive. Patan also has a Durbar Square as one of its focal points and the Square is full of statues, temples and palaces. In addition, the square houses the Patan Museum one of the area's best and a must see when visiting the city. Patan is known as one of the traditional areas for handicrafts, making it a popular area to purchase masks, jewelry and Buddha statues. Like in all of Nepal, temples dominate the skyline and Patan is no exception. The Mahaboudha Temple is made of stone and covered with terracotta tiles with over 1000 Buddha images. There are a number of other temples in the city. Many are worth a visit and include Rudravarna, Machchhednranath, Golden and Kumbheshwar. Old Patan is a nice visit to see some old relics and the Ashok Stupa.
