Bagan is one of the most historic places in Myanmar. It is one of the old capitals of the country and is packed with architectural landmarks dating form the golden times of Middle Ages Myanmar.
The city was found in year 849 AD and by the times of King Anawrahta in the middle of the 11th century it reached its high. At this time were build most of its more than 5000 remarkable Buddhist temples, pagodas and monuments. The Old city was abandoned in the end of 13th century after the invasion of the Mongols in Myanmar.
The archaeological sites of Bagan are placed in an area of more than 40 sq. km. placed between New Bagan, Old Bagan and Nyangu. The most impressive landmarks of Bagan are the Shwezigon Pagoda, constructed in 1057, the Wi-ni-do group group of sites and the Archaeological Museum with impressive collection of ancient artifacts.
