Maputo is the capital and biggest city of Mozambique in Africa.
The city of Maputo (formerly known as Lourenco Marques) is one of the most attractive capitals in Africa. It saw in noumerous ocasions a fair share of good architectural thinking and was spared form independance and civil wars taken part in the country in the second half of the 20th century.
Maputo is a major transportation hub of Mozambique as it has a port, rail station and an airport, while being close to the borders of the country with Swaziland and South Africa, which are reached by 6-8 hours of regular bus rides.
The city is also a good base for exploring the beaches and natural reserves in this area of Mozambique. The most known natural park near by is Maputo National Reserve, also known as Maputo Elephant Park, which is on the Maputo River, 79km (49 miles) south of the city.Other attractions of Maputo include the city museum, the fish market, the Central Railway Station and the curious 'Iron House'.
