The main port and capital of Mauritius, Port Louis was founded in 1735 by Mahe de Labourdonnais, a French governor. This port city is sheltered within a semicircle of mountains, which certainly adds to its already unique character. What makes Port Louis a destination in Mauritius is its elegant fusion of past and present, which is evident in its architectures.
At the main square of Place d'Armes, tourists will find many French-colonial buildings, including the Municipal Theatre and Government House. There are also the Anglican and Catholic churches, Supreme Court, and National History Museum.
For a different, more modern aspect of Port Louis, travellers will delight in the lively covered Central Market and Caudan Waterfront where they can buy all sorts of souvenirs and clothing. For some nightlife fun, there's the Port Louis Casino and Keg & Marlin Bar.
From Port Louis travellers can more on to more idyllic residential towns like that of Beau Bassin, Quatre Bornes, Rose Hill, and Vacoas.
