Mahebourg is a small town located on the southern shores of Mauritius. It was founded in 1805 and was named after Mahe de Labourdonnais, a well-known governor in the French Colonial period. It started as a bustling port city with well-planned streets during the Dutch and French colonisation. However, when the French occupiers made Port Louis the main port, Mahebourg fell back into a sleepy town.
Travellers looking to visit this city will find that its laid-back feel and quirky mix of old and new are a pleasant delight. Those on a budget will certainly find the town an excellent base for exploring nearby beaches like the Blue Bay and Pointe d'Esny.
Within the town, one will find many attractive sites to see, including the National History Museum, Notre Dame des Anges, and the Biscuit Factory. To revive tourism in Mahebourg, development within the city is well underway. In fact, the waterfront complex promises to provide memorable walks, and a casino will surely draw in more tourists.
