Mauritania's flag Flag of Mauritania
Mauritania, formally it is called “Islamic Republic of Mauritania”, and it is an Arab Maghreb state in West Africa.
It is surrounded from the west with the Atlantic Ocean, from the north with the Western Sahara, from the northeast with Algeria, from the east and southeast with Mali, and from the southwest with Senegal. Mauritania has its name from the old Berber Kingdom of Mauretania that afterward became a region of the Roman Empire, although the contemporary Mauritania covers a province distant to the south of that old Berber kingdom, which had nothing relative with that. The capital and major town is Nouakchott, positioned at the Atlantic shoreline.
The nation is almost 100% Muslim, a large amount of them are Sunnis. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Nouakchott, which established in 1965, is serving 4,500 Catholics in Mauritania.
