Ggantija, also known as the
Giant's Tower
, is found in the second largest island of Malta: Gozo. Ggantija is made up of
two megalithic temples
, the term megalithic referring to structures that are made from large stones, constructed during 3600 – 3500 B.C. also known as the Neolithic Age. The temples are part of the list of the world's oldest structures (over 5,000 years old) which are religious in nature. Ggantija is even considered a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Ggantija legend is that the temples were brought to Gozo island by Sansuna, a giantess, which is why the name Ggantija was given to the temple complex. ‘Ggantija' is a term meaning ‘giant'. The temples may be found standing at the Xaghra plateau. The two Ggantija temples actually share a court and are surrounded by high walls measuring about 17 feet. The space consumed by the Ggantija total to ten thousand square feet. It is believed that the temples served as the sites wherein rituals done by a Fertility cult are held.
