Ohrid is a city in Macedonia on the Balkan peninsula of Europe.
The city of Ohrid is one of the oldest settlements in Europe, which saw several golden ages in its development. The most notable moments in its history include the work of St Clement of Ohrid, who laid the foundations of the first Bulgarian university in the 9th century. Ohrid was also briefly in the 10th century the capital of the Bulgarian Tsar Samuil.
Nowadays there are many artifacts that show this glorious past of the city like the survived fortress walls, the oldest Bulgarian monastery (St Pantelejmon), the Cathedral of St Sophia and a unique collection of more than 800 Orthodox icons, but Ohrid offers also an unique blend of 19th century Ottoman, Bulgarian and Greek architecture, flavored with the unbelievable beauty of the surrounding nature.
One of the most visited natural landmarks near the city are the biggest lake on the Balkans - the Ohrid lake and the National Park Galicica, just south of the town.
