Macedonia's flag Flag of Macedonia
The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is a landlocked country in the Balkans.
Unofficially called only Macedonia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia owns its rather strange name to a claim form Greece, that Macedonia is the name of one of its prefectures and a name of historic Hellenic origin, with no direct connection with the current country of Macedonia.
Historically Macedonia was the geographical center of the lands held by Alexander The Great, before extending his empire with the lands of today's Bulgaria, Greece and the Middle East. At a later stage the land was conquered by Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, Serbs and Turks, to be liberated in 1912 by the Bulgarians, just to be conquered again by Serbia and later to become part of Yugoslavia. After 1991 Macedonia is an independent country with unstable government and economy, tared apart by religious and ethnic unrest.
Macedonia offers many see sides including the Ohrid lake and some architectural and natural landmarks.
