Vilnius, Lithuania's capital, had for a long time stayed hidden in the shadows and is the least visited capital in the Baltic State. However, since joining the European Union, the city has been declared a European Capital of Culture. This has also opened up the capital's charms to the world.
The heart of Vilnius is stunning, surrounded by a well-preserved and vast, old town in Baroque architecture, and fringed by the Neris and Vilnia Rivers. A visit to the Castle Hill's Gediminas Tower for fantastic views of the city will tell any tourist just how many churches the capital has.
Among the city's popular attractions include the one-of-a-kind statue of American musician Frank Zappa, which was sculpted by local artist Konstantinas Bogdanas. There's also the Hill of Three Crosses where a group of monks was crucified around the 17th century. And the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Vilnius Cathedral, which boasts a stunningly white facade and a freestanding belltower, and Old Town are must-sees.
