Trakai, located 28 km from the capital Vilnius, is a popular lake resort town in Lithuania. First mentioned by the Teutonic Knights in 1337, it was a former medieval capital of the country. And despite having just less than 10,000 inhabitants, it offers numerous pastoral and cultural experiences for urban travellers and foreign tourists alike.
The magnificent Trakai Peninsula Castle which features 7 towers connected to each other by a 10-m high wall. It served as a defensive structure for Trakai and Vilnius from attacks by the Teutonic Knights.
For some dose of culture and history, a visit to any of Trakai's museums is sure to add fun to any trip. There's the Karaite Ethnographic Museum, Sacred Art Museum, and the Rowing Museum. Nature lovers will certainly enjoy a stroll in one of Lithuania's national parks. The Trakai Historical National Park boasts 8,200 hectares of spectacular scenery that includes lakes, rolling hills, and woodlands.
