Klaipeda, Lithuania's 3rd largest country, is also its most significant port. Throughout the centuries, the city was under the rule of many nations, which includes Sweden, Russia, and Germany. In fact, its old town has a lot of monuments from these different periods and is quite popular with the German tourists. The French also came and occupied the city until 1923 when it was eventually put under the rule of Lithuania.
Its historic Old Town boasts a Theatre Square, a fountain, and the History Museum of Lithuania Minor, where visitors can spend endless hours walking and enjoying the sights. Venture into the newer part of town and one will find impressive structures such as the Post Office and the Clock Museum with its 18-century clock.
Worth a visit are The Castle Museum and the beaches of Smiltyne, Giruliai, and Melnrage during the summer. A short ride on a ferry will bring visitors across the Curonian Lagoon into Nida and the Curonian Spit where they can tour the Maritime Museum.
