Kaunas, the 2nd largest city in Lithuania, is shaped by years of wars and occupations. In recent years, the city has experienced something of a cultural renaissance, shedding itself of its reputation as second best to the capital city of Vilnius. It is now emerging as a destination in its own right. It boasts the country's best nightclubs, as well as great bars and restaurants, genuinely affordable accommodation, and an airport serving a number of European destinations. Where Kaunas was once a little more than a place to visit for its fine attractions, it now offers a smorgasbord of hedonistic pleasures.
Among its points of interests, the most prominent is the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica - the biggest Gothic structure in the whole of Lithuania. It features a Baroque interior with a blessed sacrament carved in wood in a neo-gothic style. Another attraction here is the Kaunas Castle which dates back to the 14th century, and the Vytautas' Church, which is among of the oldest in the country.
