Tripoli, the capital of Libya, is also called the Western Tripoli to distinguish it from the city with the same name in Lebanon. The capital is also more fondly called the "Bride of the Sea" because of the turquoise sea that surrounds the city's buildings and its white-washed walls.
The city is the location of Libya's main port, which is the centre of commerce and manufacturing in the country. The city is also home to a number of architectural marvel that reflects its long history as well as the years of occupation by the Ottoman and Italians.
Many of the city's must-see attractions are located in Medina, the old part of the city. The vast complex has retained much of its Old-World atmosphere. Here, tourists will enjoy the Red Castle Museum, where they'll see expansive courtyards, as well as classical fountains and statues.
The city's souks or public markets are the ideal places to buy beautiful jewellery, clothes, and souvenirs.
