Ghat is a town located in southwestern Libya, near the Algerian border. It is situated on the ancient Saharan caravan route and was a slave-trading hub during the European exploration in the 19th century. Ghat lies west of the hilly sandstone area of Wadi Tanezzuft, near the Tadrart Plateau and Jibal Mountains.
The town is compact and walled, consisting of narrow alleyways, white houses, and covered arcades. Here, the water supply is strictly regulated by customary law. It is also the home of the Tuareg, a nomadic pastoralist people. Outside the walls, gardens that yield vegetables and cereals can be found. In nearby wadis livestock are grazed.
Though, life in Ghat seem very quiet, it is still a key tourist destination for the prehistoric rock engravings and rock painting found in nearby Tassili N'Ajjer Mountain and Tadrart Acacus. Within the town itself, travellers will find the Koukemen or Fortress of Ghat.
