Al-Khums, also spelled as Khoms or Homs, is a town in northwestern Libya. It is situated on the Mediterranean coast about 97 km from the capital Tripoli. The town was established by the Turks and gained importance in the late 1800s by exporting esparto grass, which was used in shoes and paper manufacturing. Today, Al-Khums' economy also depends on tuna processing, soap fabrication, and production of olive oil.
Perhaps the most significant aspect of the town is that it is the base for travellers wanting to see the ancient Roman city of Leptis Magna with its extensive, stunning ruins. It is also one of the best preserved Roman cities on the Mediterranean Sea. Aside from Leptis, the town of Al-Khums boasts public garden and mosques. Then, there's Silin, one of the most beautiful beaches in Libya.
