Al-Bayda, or Zawiyat al-Bayda, is a town located on the northeastern part of Libya. It is a relatively new town that lies on a ridge about 20 miles away from the Mediterranean Sea. It was established in the 1950s around the tomb of Rawayfi ibn Thabit, Prophet Muhammad's companion. The town was designed as a future capital, containing ministerial offices, a parliament building, and a centre for islamic studies. However, it never became the capital.
There are a few attractions in the city, including the Temple of Aesculapius, the god of healing. It is located on the outskirts of the city. This temple was said to be a replica of a Greek city named Ballagari. The ruins have been dated to as far back as the 4th century BC. Another historic site in the city is the Haua Fteah Cave, where the 100,000-year old human remains were found in the 1950s.
Though there's little see within Al-Bayda itself, it is the perfect base for exploring the popular archeological sites of Apollonia and Cyrene.
