Turkistan is one of the most visited towns in Kazakhstan in Northwest Asia.
The city of Turkistan is full of ancient history and monuments of the greatest days of the Kazakh people. The archaeological data of the city dates back to the 4th century AC, but its prime was in the 11th century, when it rice as the Islamic educational center of the whole region. This was due to its greatest person - Hodja Akhmed Yassawi. After that the city was the capital of the Kazakh khans and later the trading center of the region.
The greatest landmarks of the city date from the Middle Ages with several palaces, mosques and tombs of Kazakh khans along with one of the most known mausoleums of the time - the Mausoleum of the philosopher and Islamic scholar Hodja Akhmed Yassawi, build by the great khan Timur.
Today's Turkistan is is visited also as an industrial and educational center, with the biggest university in Kazakhstan - the "Hodja Akhmed Yassawi" university.
