With over 7,100 islands, the Philippines is blessed with some of the world's most pristine and beautiful beaches. Some are renowned like Boracay and Coron, and others less popular but equally, or even more, impressive. And still some that are remote yet will take your breath away by its splendour and tranquillity.
If there was one other thing this archipelago in South East Asia boasts is that the sunny weather perfectly complements the beautiful coastlines of the country. In fact, during the summer season, the beaches teem with foreign travellers and local tourists who come to enjoy the refreshing waters of the Philippine seas. And the country undoubtedly has a lot to offer those looking for some fun under the sun.
With so many places to choose from, you wonder where do you go first? Here are some ideas:
Panglao Island, Bohol. Located in Central Visayas, Bohol's Panglao Island is very much like Borcay. It has the same powdery, white-sand beaches, it is an island as well, and it has numerous resorts you can choose from. Here, there's no time to get bored as it offers myriad activities to keep your days and nights occupied.
However, the big difference between Bohol and Boracay is that the former is less crowded and more laid back. And you are not limited to water sports activities as Bohol is a trove natural attractions, too. Visit the world-renowned Chocolate Hills and the Tarsier Sanctuary, where you'll see the smallest mammal in the world. See historic monuments and places such as the Baclayon Church and the Blood Compact Shrine. Indeed, one has to see this place to be enthralled.
Amanpulo. If there were a place that could be synonymous with luxury, exclusivity, and opulence that place is Amanpulo. Occupying a whole island, the posh resort pulls out all the stops for the ultimate in indulgence. Feel like a royal inside lavishly furnished, private villas that come with its own electric buggy, personal chef, and all the comforts of home - only much, much better.
Here, at this all-inclusive resort, everything is laid out for you. Every convenience is taken care of in a heartbeat. Rejuvenate with a massage, explore the islands treasure in the buggy, or dine in pleasure by the beach or inside your villa. Outside, white-sand beaches that stretch for miles and the blue sky await – truly heaven has just come down to earth.
Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. North of the Philippine island of Luzon, you'll find Pagudpud. Consisting of three large beaches hemmed in by rock points jutting out of the ocean, Pagudpud boasts of pristine white beaches that turn light golden brown early in the morning and late afternoon. The most popular beach is Saud where most of the resorts are.
Maira-ira Beach is, without doubt, the most stunning beach in Northern Philippines. It used to be a little known beach, but now is really gaining popularity. And it's not a surprise as the waters are clear, crystalline blue and calm. It is perfect for a leisurely swim. It's a quiet place – might be remote even – and it's totally paradisiacal.
Potipot Island, Zambales. It is a little known island that's still waiting for its turn in the world-stage spotlight. However, those who had the opportunity to visit this 7.5-hectare uninhabited islet off the coast of Zambales leaves with only high praises. It's the perfect place to experience the stranded-on-an-island-yet-not-really and feel like it's just you, the sand, the sea, and the sky.
Here, there are no public accommodations or resorts, and many go for day tours and stay in a hotel on the main island. Although, you can go camping on the island for a night, or rent a hut to stay in overnight.
Matukad Island, Caramoan, Camarines Sur. Another off-the-beaten-path beach that can only be found in the Philippines. This shoreline offers the best combination of 2 of the most popular beach destinations in the country, Boracay and Palawan. It boasts white-sand beaches comparable to Boracay, and majestic limestone cliff like that of Palawan's - but without the frenetic buzz of tourists, locals, and shops. And if you feel like going into Survivor mode, just across is Gota Beach, where the popular show was shot.
