Padua, the ancient Patavium, located in the north-east of Italy, not far from Venice, is an interesting place where to stop for a weekend or just for a day.
The tour can start in the historical centre from the central Piazza del Duomo, with its Dom, built also by Michelangelo. Close to the Dom, there's the baptistry of the 13th Century with many fresco works inside. Behind the baptistry, we find the Caffe' Pedrocchi, the most important cafe' of the city, once attended by S.tendhal, Gautier and Ippolito Nievo, where to taste the special espresso Pedrocchi or the Michelangelo coffee. Not far, there's the stunning Piazza delle Erbe, by night meeting point of universitary students tasting a typical spritz, made by prosecco, aperol and soda. The Palazzo della Ragione dominates Piazza delle Erbe with its many restaurants and bars, in particular the Caffe' Vescovi, another historical cafe' of Padua.
From Piazza delle Erbe you can reach Piazza del Santo, passing along Palazzo della Prefettura, with the great Basilica di Sant'Antonio, cathedral of Saint Anthony, a gothic - romanic church whose construction started in 1231. Inside there's the grave of the Saint and the visit is absolutely "compulsory". Close to the square, there's the Unesco site, the Botanic garden, the most ancient of Europe: the visit here is absolutely worth. Leaving these important sites the sight will meet one of the largest squares of Europe, called Prato della Valle, with 84 statues, fountains and a water channel around it. Not far from Prato della Valle, there's also Palazzo del Bo', the university headquarters, called Bo' because the building included an old hotel with a cow sign.
To complete this tour the Cappella degli Scrovegni is the ideal place, as fabulous frescos of painter Giotto cover the internal walls and illustrate episodes of life of Christ and Mary.
