Petra is the most notable monument of Jordan. It is an ancient city carved into the rocks of Wadi Musa Canyon 1100 m above sea level in the desert mountains. Petra was the capital city of the Nabataean peoples, which stood in those land for thousands of years. It was discovered in 1812 by the Swiis explorer Johan Ludwig Burckhardt and nowadays is a UNESCO heritage site and one of the New 7 wonders of the world.
The uniqueness of Petra is hiding behind the wonderfully carved government palaces, buildings and tombs that are virtually dig in the cliffs of the canyon. The entrance to the city is in the touristic center of Wadi Musa, where are and all the hotels and restaurants, while up in the canyon is the real archaeological beauty of Petra.
The most remarkable landmarks that you can see are The Treasury, which is the most monumental temple and the first building that you'll see, The Roman Theater, the Royal Tombs, the Monastery and the High Place of Sacrifice further up the canyon.
