Galway, on Ireland's west coast, is the 5th largest urban zone in the country and one of the fastest growing cities. It has a population of more than 70,000 and has been known as The City of the Tribes for a long time. In the 15th century, the city was governed by 14 families or tribes. These tribes erected many castles within Galway.   The city of Galway, or Gaillimh in Irish, boasts of being West Ireland's main tourist destination. It offers visitors with a fantastic nightlife, where its numerous pubs serve world-renowned Irish beers.   Other activities in Galway will more than entertain tourists. In July, the city celebrates the Galway Arts Festival, which is famed for its Macnas Parade – public performances that are spectacular and colourful. There's also St. Patrick's Day, the most famous Irish event that happens on March 17th.   Aside from the above, Galway's attractions are also worth a visit. The most famous is the Eyre Square. Nearby is the popular area of Shop Street and Williams Street. Also within the area is the Spanish Arch, the town's ancient defence structure.
