Yogyakarta (pronounced as "Jogjakarta" or "Jogja" for short) is one of Java's most attractive and best-preserved cities. It is also a leading centre of the Javanese arts of ballet, batik, theatre, poetry, music and puppetry.
At the heart of Yogya is Kraton, the elegant palace of the city's Sultan and his family, the Hamengkubuwonos. The palace, hidden behind crenelated walls, is still the hub od Yogya's traditional life. The royal house of Yogya continues to bask under the almost slavish devotion of its subjects, while the current sultan remains an influential force in politics.
However, tourists come here, attracted not only by the splendor of the city, but also by the nearby temples of Prambanan and Borobudur. There's also the Tugu Monument, which is located at the centre of town. For some Dutch-Colonial architecture, visit the Benteng Vredeburg. For those looking to enrich their world-culture knowledge, visit the museums of Affandi, Dirgantara, Kekayon, and Sonobudoyo.
